My fave podcasts to help me get through the working week

If you've watched my latest YouTube video on my channel where I take you through my first ever day in the life video working in public accounting as a graduate during busy season, something I wanted to include in the video but forgot to mention, as part of my regular daily working routine, were the podcasts that I listened to on that particular day.

I am a huge podcast geek and freak, while I enjoy listening to music with my headphones in at work, I gain more enjoyment listening to podcasts (during the 12+ hour days especially) as I get a bit of a giggle and also learn as much as possible while working. Most of the time I don't always zone into what I'm listening to as I work but it's nice having something there on in the background, and if I ever come across a point that I want to remember, I'll pause work and take a quick note of it down in my diary.

With that being said -- please find below my favourite podcasts that I've been listening to while at work, categorised by genre with my take on what they are, who they are, why I love it and why you would too!

For learning

Finance

What is it:
Australia's #1 (and also my personal #1) finance podcast that actually teaches financial literacy in simple, modern and practical terms.

Who is it:
Founded and hosted by Victoria Devine, Melbourne based AFSL licensed financial advisor & millennial money expert. Joined by second host by Georgia King,  content editor, student and journalist.

Why I like it:
Hosted by women and targeted for women (, this podcast has helped me increase my financial literacy significantly since I first discovered it in late 2018 to early 2019. It covers financial topics from your classic need to know such as investing, insurance, credit cards, debt, superannuation and so on, to other topics broader that relate to anything in life that has to do with money - including advice on how to manage money in relationships. I particularly like the focus on each person's individual 'money story', which is something unique that I haven't come across at all in all of my financial podcast listening; book reading and YouTube watching before.

Who it's perfect for:
Anyone that wants to gain more financial literacy in a way that actually makes sense and is easy to understand. Perfect for millennial or gen z as they cover lot of relatable issues and terms.

What is it:
Australia's first financial podcast packaged in an infotainment format (information + entertainment) created by millennials for millennials (Glen at least - not sure about John). A lot of stand alone episodes with the hosts themselves, and also features with lots of guests ranging from different topics and industries.

Who is it:
Founded by Glen James (milennial financial advisor and entrepreneur) and John Pidgeon (advisor and property expert).

Why I like it:
Learning + entertainment. I've cracked up so many times listening to this while in the office with my headphones in. Asides from teaching me about financial literacy, similar to SOTM, this podcast is very practical and puts often complex terms and topics ranging from complex investments, to business structures, tax, insurance, so on and so forth, in actual simple terms easy for us gen z or millennials to understand and actually apply.

Who it's perfect for:
Anyone who wants to learn more about finance while also being entertained at the same time. Anyone who already has a decent or good financial literacy can still benefit from this as there are always new perspectives and topics of further complexities.

My personal key takeaways/thoughts on both finance podcasts:
Along with SOTM, both MMM have inspired me to actually start investing in early 2019, as well as plan other 'adulting' finance decisions such as organising personal income protection/life insurance, as well as how to budget better and plan long term goals around money.

Current events, news & politics

What is it:
Current world news, politics and events presented by the New York Times, 20 minute a day, 5 times a week.

Who is it:
Hosted by Michael Barbaro, featuring many journalists from the New York Times, as well as other guests.

Why I like it:
Fantastic well researched and acclaimed journalism with excellent production quality, editing and range of stories- it feels as if I'm watching a short news documentary short on each episode. Easily my favourite (and only tbh) news podcast of all time.

Who it's perfect for:
Anyone who wants to keep up to date on worldwide current affairs and is looking for a credible news source. Anyone who appreciates good quality journalism especially on field.

My personal key takeaways/thoughts:
The Daily has helped me to keep up to date on current news and events from a credible source. I don't watch free to air TV news channels or go out of my way to read news article websites. It has also helped me maintain at least one source of credible journalism in today's day and age which can be filled with overwhelming and hidden bias.

For entertainment

True Crime

What is it:
A highly (and I cannot stress this enough) highly entertaining, hilarious and thoroughly detailed podcast that covers all things relating to true crime.

Who is it:
Hosted by Ash (hairdresser by trade) and Alaina (autopsy technician) who are both true crime, horror and all things spooky obsessed. Ash and Alaina are based in the US from Massachusetts.

Why I like it:
Hands down the. most. entertaining. true crime podcast you'll ever listen to! Both are incredibly witty, hilarious and deliver some of the most heinous, solved and unsolved true crime stories in the best form I've ever listened to truly. Almost everything that comes out of their mouths are things you can save to yourself to quote later, they're that funny. They also do lots of bonus episodes besides the classic true crime podcasts, they have listener tales and also cover both historical, current and past true crime events.

Who it's perfect for:
Anyone who enjoys true crime and also a good laugh. Most true crime fans would know this podcast by now! If you're looking to get into true crime - start here!

My personal key takeaways/thoughts:
I have become a quick true crime fanatic ever since I discovered this podcast in mid 2019. I am constantly laughing and I am now part of this unique community of true crime fanatics. I have also been able to actually enjoy listening to stories without being too terrified or dragged down as the hosts do a great job of keeping you laughing so it's somewhat still light hearted.

Social commentary, romance, lifestyle & modern philosophy

What is it:
The 'world's first cross-continental podcast' that entertains, educates and provides critical thinking on topics ranging from diversity, race, dating, lifestyle, pop culture, philosophy, advice and more.

Who is it:
Hosted by Bobo Matjila (South African philosopher based in NYC) and Flex Mami (Australian entrepreneur and multidisciplinary millennial with background and experience in media, PR, TV, writing, beauty fashion and more).

Why I like it:
It encourages me to critically think about all ranges of topics and social issues with new insights and perspectives. It explores and encourages free flow thinking, confidence and and challenges the societal norms of thinking, while also tackling and addressing issues in such a highly intelligent but hilarious manner simultaneously. The podcast is highly inspiring and often leaves me in awe at how the two can articulate all of life's problems so effortlessly and in a way that hits the nail on the head that no one else has thought of before.

Who it's perfect for:
Anyone who wants to gain perspectives and insights on all things to do with life, relationships, cultural and world issues and put both a  a critical thinking and out of the box hat. Perfect for those looking to open their minds and enjoys seeing hosts on a podcast with differing perspectives at times.

My personal key takeaways/thoughts:
While this is a new podcast admittedly that I've discovered only within the past couple of weeks - I've been hooked and have quickly binged most of the episodes. I've been able to learn how to articulate or make sense in a philosophical sense, many of life's dilemmas ranging from areas of dating, friendships, race, the working world and so on and so forth. It's helped also encourage female empowerment and a shift to be your own unapologetic self.

Something that this podcast has helped me think about lately is my perspective on friendships, and what it means to be a good friend. It's highly encouraged me to think outside of the box and challenge other perspectives in ways that I might not have considered before.

Beauty + Social Media

What is it:
An all encompassing beauty podcast focusing on skincare, makeup as well as being an influencer in the social media landscape.

Who is it:
Hosted by twin brothers James Welsh (skincare enthusiast and YouTuber) and Robert Welsh (professional makeup artist and relatively recent YouTuber) based in London, England.

Why I like it:
As a beauty enthusiast and "YouTuber", this podcast is perfect for me to keep up to date and actually educate myself on beauty topics such as knowing what skincare ingredients mean what, what beauty treatments are pointless, the inner workings of being an influencer and more. Overall this is basically a serotonin booster packed into a podcast. Every time either brother or both giggle or crack up - it's infectious and it makes me do the same. Definitely a mood booster for those late nights when I'm feeling stressed.

Who it's perfect for:
Anyone who enjoys beauty and wants to learn more about skincare and makeup, likes to laugh and is interested in social media, especially those who are social media content creators.

My personal key takeaways/thoughts:
Joy, laughter and more facts when it comes to beauty including skincare products + ingredients, as well as the beauty community as a whole. Honestly this podcast is just pure innocent laughter and joy - it gives me a good break from when I've listened to the other podcasts that I have to be switched on for (finance + world news. I also just love the bond of both James and Robert, their humour, accents and approach on all things beauty and life.

Conclusion
I hope that if you're looking for a new podcast, you consider any one of these, try out an episode and let me know what you think! I adore podcasts  as there's such a wide variety and it's available on so many platforms that are generally free also. I personally listen using Spotify. In conclusion, I love podcasts, don't know how I'd work and low-key survive without them.

Let me know what you guys think and if you've ever listened to any of these before - if you have any other podcast recommendations do let me know! I'm open to all genres and topics.
