Makeup Geek Eyeshadows & Pigments - REVIEW & SWATCHES

A couple days ago I received my Makeup Geek eyeshadows and pigments that I ordered from the Makeup Geek website while they had their 10% off stock up sale. Seeing as Makeup Geek hardly ever have any sales, I jumped at this chance to finally pick up these gems online after lusting after them for so long! I ended up purchasing the Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Starter Kit which consists of 9 eyeshadows, two extra pan eyeshadows in the colours Bitten and Vanilla Bean, and also two loose pigments in the colours Insomnia and Vegas Lights.

I ordered my package on the 24th November. It dispatched on the 26th and arrived on the 8th of December, which took approx. 8 business days -  standard for shipping from the US to Australia. Overall my purchase was around US$75 (with the 10% off) and converted to approx. AU$95 with the shipping which was $12.42, affordable international shipping compared to other US/international based sites. (Our Aussie dollar is currently so low, sigh)

Customer service, shipping and overall purchase on the online site was very good. I had no problems at all and the package arrived very fast for something coming from the states! Positive online shopping experience overall.

Eyeshadows

  • 9 Eyeshadow Starter Kit (retails for $49.99 without the Z-palette):
  • Each eyeshadow pan retails for $5.99 individually, with the compact it is $7.99 (I just checked the MUG website on the 17th of December 2014 and it seems that all of the compacts are out of stock - may be possibly available in the pans from now on?)
  • The starter kit is a bundle that saves you $3.91 - not that much of a difference, however good basic and essential shadows to start off with, although it does lack a basic white/beige

Individual Eyeshadows - Reviews & Swatches

I'm going to quickly go through the two shadows that I purchased separately from the 9 shadow starter kit and then review the starter kit itself.

* = not included in the 9 eyeshadow starter kit

Bitten *
Bitten
  • A super popular eyeshadow amongst the Youtube community - one of Jaclyn Hill's favourites hence why I purchased it and had high expectations
  • What it is: a matte deep purple/burgundy/maroon red
  • Had good pigmentation, creamy, however I found it slightly powdery or chalky especially while swatching, on the eyelids it blends well
  • Perfect colour to sweep over the lids, into the crease - you can do anything with this colour!
  • Longevity: great with an eye primer it lasted for more than 9 hours, I had it on for 12 hours on a day once and towards the last few hours it faded a little.
  • Rating: 4/5 stars
Vanilla Bean *
Vanilla Bean
  • An essential base or "nothing" shadow
  • What it is: a simple neutral beige, off white, eggshell white colour. Comes off as matte to me, although it is listed on the MUG website has having a slight shimmer?
  • Had okay pigmentation - because it is such a basic cream eyeshadow colour, it is not as highly noticeable as the other shadows. Slightly powdery, although easily blendable.
  • Great for a subtle highlight without being too over the top, also essential and versatile
  • Longevity: did not last as long as the other eyeshadows, very simple and plain, fades more easily
  • Rating: 3.5/5
Shimma Shimma

Shimma Shimma
  • One of my favourites from all of these eyeshadows!
  • What it is: a shimmery/metallic champagne
  • Amazing pigmentation - can't say enough about how pigmented this is! As always, shimmers are wonderful!
  • Longevity: decent longevity, but due to the nature of white/cream colours, they do tend to fade a little more. Better than vanilla bean for sure.
  • Rating: 4.5/5 (would give it 5/5 but it does fade a over a couple of hours)
Glamorous

Glamorous
  • An essential bronzy gold, has warm orange undertones
  •  What it is: A bronzy gold shimmer shadow
  • Pigmentation: great pigmentation
  • Longevity: haven't worn this colour out yet, will edit this post and post my feedback afterwards! sorry guys :(
  • Rating: - will edit after I wear this shadow several times
Prom Night
Prom Night
  • A gorgeous pale purple with hints of grey, great to smoke up the eyes if you don't want to go into harsher black tones
  • What it is: a pale purple shimmer
  • Pigmentation: Awesome pigmentation! Creamy, buttery, easily blendable as with all of the shadows!
  • Longevity: haven't worn this colour out yet, will edit this post and post my feedback afterwards! sorry guys :(
  • Rating: - will edit after I wear this shadow several times
Unexpected
Unexpected
  • A matte light purple, good purple tones (a plus for me because I love purple on the eyes!) It comes off as a lighter purple to me, however on the MUG website it's listed as being pink?
  • What it is: a pale purple/pink matte shadow
  • Pigmentation: Fairly decent pigmentation, creamy and buttery even though it is a matte
  • Longevity: haven't worn this colour out yet, will edit this post and post my feedback afterwards! sorry guys :(
  • Rating: - will edit after I wear this shadow several times
Drama Queen
Drama Queen
  • A daring, bold and deep purple
  • What it is: a deep dense purple shimmer shadow
  • Pigmentation: Highly pigmented! creamy, buttery etc
  • Longevity: haven't worn this colour out yet, will edit this post and post my feedback afterwards! sorry guys :(
  • Rating: - will edit after I wear this shadow several times
Cocoa Bear
Cocoa Bear
  • A must have shadow! If you're going to get one shadow, get one of these - a reddish brown tone that is perfect for the crease/transition
  • What it is: warm reddish brown, matte
  • Pigmentation: Highly pigmented! creamy, buttery etc
  • Longevity: Fantastic longevity, lasted for over 12 hours, only faded the tiniest bit around 10 hours (worn with an eye primer however)
  • Rating: 4.5/5
Mocha
Mocha
  • Standard brown - definitely a must have essential shade
  • What it is: Deep/medium matte brown
  • Pigmentation: Great pigmentation for a matte, creamy and buttery as with the other shadows
  • Longevity: Good longevity, lasted for over 12 hours and fades around the last 3 hours
  • Rating: 4.5/5
Corrupt

Corrupt

  • Must have eyeshadow to deepen any eye look, create smokey eyes etc
  • What it is: very intense matte black with subtle hints of shimmer
  • Pigmentation: Incredibly pigmented! Cannot say how intense this eyeshadow is, you only need a light amount - and make sure you tap off the excess! very creamy, buttery and easily blendable
  • Longevity: Fantastic longevity, lasted for over 12 hours and fades around the last 3 hours with an eye primer
  • Rating: 4.5/5
Swatches of the 9 Eyeshadow Starter Kit

Overall thoughts on the eyeshadows:
  • Fantastic quality for the price they are - US$5.99 per pan (compared to MAC shadows which retail for ~US$14 per pan)
  • All shadows are buttery, creamy, and easily blendable
  • The only slightly powdery shadows I found were Bitten and Vanilla Bean (they are mattes, which is expected, but nonetheless they are great)
  • The shimmers were more pigmented than the mattes and more intense
  • Mattes were creamy and buttery and of high quality compared with other mattes in the eyeshadow world
  • Overall rating of shadows: 4/5
  • Would I repurchase? YES!
Pigments

Vegas Lights (left), Insomnia (right)
Vegas Lights (left)
  • Intense, highly pigmented (hence the name pigment haha) copper/bronze
  • I'm a sucker for copper/warm toned shadows, so this is perfect!
  • Amazing quality, great finish, gorgeous all in all
  • Rating: 5/5
Insomnia (right)
  • Unique duochrome colour - red/brown, blue/teal, captures the light well and reflect tones of teal/reddish brown
  • Amazing quality, intense, I love this colour SO much!
  • Rating: 5/5
Overall thoughts on the two pigments:
  • AMAZING!
  • Intense enough to how a pigment should be, and still buttery/creamy none the less
  • 110% impressed
  • Overall rating: 5/5
  • Would I repurchase? YES!
